Thota Vaikuntam is a popular Indian artist, hailing from Burugupalli, Karimnagar District, Telangana. Vaikuntam studied Diploma in Painting (1965-70), from the College of Fine Arts and Architecture, Hyderabad. Also, Painting and Printmaking (1971-72), from the Faculty of Fine Arts, at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (On a Lalit Kala Academy Fellowship from Andhra Pradesh). He was under the tutelage of renowned Indian artist, K. G. Subramanyan, at Baroda.
Vaikuntam paints colorful and elaborately dressed Telangana men and women. His muse is the sensuous and voluptuous women of Telangana with their omnipresent vermilion bindis, draped in colorful sarees that highlight their dusky skin.
His painting`s stylization is a perfect foil to Indian classical dance as the figures seem to dance, like a statuesque movement, reminiscent of temple friezes, following their creator. He uses reds and yellows to the best, as they fill the small format of his paintings draped in bright Sircilla saris, the simple women become larger than life.
